Lacrosse, Custard & Close Calls: Our Weekend in Lewisville, Texas

This past weekend, our family packed up and headed to Lewisville, Texas, for the NXT Wildcard Lacrosse Tournament—a high-energy showdown at Railroad Park that didn’t disappoint. Between the competition, great food, and a few sweet treats, it was a weekend full of memories, wins, and just a little heartbreak.

Saturday: Game Day Domination

Saturday was a full throttle kind of day. Our team came out firing and won all three of our games, showcasing grit, teamwork, and some serious stick skills. Railroad Park was buzzing with action, and the energy on the sidelines was electric—parents cheering, players locked in, and coaches dialing up just the right plays. Preston had some great game moments and played really well. He's really digging his new STX Surgeon 1K lacrosse head at the attack position.

After the long day on the field, we rolled into Rock & Brews for a well-earned team dinner. The vibe was perfect—laid-back, loud enough for laughter, and packed with hungry kids and proud parents. It was indoors but had a patio feel with large fans that kept it cool but not cold. Burgers, ribs, wings, (a cobb salad as I try and eat healthier options!) and a few cold drinks for the adults made it a great way to unwind and celebrate the day’s clean sweep. There was a caveat to this Rock & Brews in that we were there Saturday night, where the next day was their last day to be open. That location is now permanently closed.

But no team dinner is complete without dessert. We capped off the night with a stop at Andy’s Frozen Custard, where cones, sundaes, and concretes flew out of the windows faster than face-off wins. Let’s just say, the sugar high matched the tournament high.

Sunday: A Bittersweet Finish

Sunday morning started with a quick breakfast at the team hotel, La Quinta, which was what you'd expect in the form of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, and some Texas shaped waffles. This hotel was great because it was only a 5 minute drive to the fields. Fueled by waffles and orange juice, the boys hit the field and picked up another win, punching their ticket to the semi-finals.

The semifinal game was intense. Both teams battled hard, and the scoreboard reflected it. We fell just short with a nail-biting 5-4 loss in the last minute of a tied game, ending our run earlier than we hoped—but not without a fight. The kids left everything on the field, and while the loss stung, it was clear this group had taken another big step forward as a team.

Wrapping It Up

Lewisville gave us a weekend full of action, community, and memories we’ll be talking about for a long time. From the fields of Railroad Park to late-night custard runs, this was more than just a tournament—it was a chance to come together, compete, and enjoy the ride.

Until the next one—Thomas Smith
